Highly gifted students can be any race or nationality, any gender, any socioeconomic background. They can be bright and outspoken in the classroom or they can be bored and distracted. That's why identifying and nurturing the needs of highly gifted students is so important.

Exceptional giftedness is traditionally defined by an IQ score that exceeds 160, which makes it clear that the student is extraordinarily intelligent beyond his or her years. However, this extraordinary intelligence does not make school easy; highly gifted students face a number of problems that can make or break their educational experiences. They often struggle because their emotional age does not match their intellectual age, making dealing with advanced issues like death, war, the meaning of life, and cruelty in the world especially traumatic. The advanced sense of humor and interests typical of highly gifted students can also make it difficult for them to interact with their peers of the same age. Teachers that are not sympathetic to or supportive of the highly gifted student can also pose a problem, generating feelings of negativity within the student towards his or her education.

However, parents and teachers can help their students deal with these issues by taking advantage of all of the resources out their for highly gifted students.
